– April 4, 1777: Louis XVI creates the Department of General Quarry Inspection, which is in charge of protecting Parisian quarries. – 1780: closing of the Saints-Innocents cemetery. – April 7, 1786: benediction and consecration of the Tombe-Issoire quarries, which become the municipal ossuary known as the “Catacombs”.
Where did the bodies in the catacombs come from?

What was Papillons sin?
Papillon is confronted by a sin from his past that resulted in death. He refuses to claim responsibility, and Hell dooms him as a result. Instead of being frozen in a lake, he’s frozen in stone.

Production. With permission from the French authorities the film was shot in the real catacombs of Paris. Production in the actual catacombs was difficult for the cast and especially the crew as there was no electricity or cell phone service in the centuries-old tunnels.
