What RPM should timing be set at?
3,000 – 3,500 rpm
Rev the engine past the point where your mechanical advance is fully engaged. (Usually, 3,000 – 3,500 rpm will do it.) Watch the timing mark on the harmonic balancer using the timing light. Rotate the distributor until the timing mark lines up at zero with the light.
What should my spark timing be?
“Timing advance” refers to the number of degrees before top dead center (BTDC) that the spark will ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber at the end of the compression stroke. Ideally, the time at which the mixture should be fully burnt is about 20 degrees ATDC.
What should timing advance be at idle?
between 5-20 degrees
Most engines have between 5-20 degrees of ignition advance at idle. This is referred to as initial timing.
Should timing be set at idle?
As the engine RPM comes-up, it’s the initial timing AND the mechanical advance that gives you your TOTAL timing. You NEED advance at low RPM to make that engine pull hard. It’ll have MUCH better throttle response, a better idle vacuum signal, and it’ll run cooler & cleaner.
What is normal timing advance?
What is normal timing advance? That is typically 15-35 degrees before TDC (top dead center) of the power stroke depending on the engine speed. Best power is achieved when ignition timing is set to fire the spark ahead of time to reach that peak pressure at about 2 degrees after TDC.
How much initial timing is too much?
It depends on how much mechanical advance is in the distributor that you are using. If your initial is at least 12* after adjusting your total to 34*, I’d say you are in good shape.
What should the timing be on a Mopar 340?
Timing should be at 33-35 deg BTDC at 3,000 RPM w/vacuum advance disconnected, then reconnect it. This should result in around 10-18 deg BTDC at idle. This is going to sound nuts but I am digging through an old manual and it is showing 5degrees advance for the 340 in a cuda or a dart sport either one.
What should the timing be on a 340 Duster?
Motor is in a 340 Duster, Edlebrock Air gap, Holley 750, Mild comp cam, factory X heads and headman headers car runs and starts great. Timing should be at 33-35 deg BTDC at 3,000 RPM w/vacuum advance disconnected, then reconnect it. This should result in around 10-18 deg BTDC at idle. Click to expand…
What should the timing be on a vaccum adavance?
With the vaccum adavance plugged in, set the timing at around 30. It should idle well there but use a vacuum gauge to get the highest vacuum reading you can get and it should be right. Benefits are that the initial will be low enough to start easily, then on start up, it will come back up to your 30 or so.
