What is a steno keyboard?
A steno machine, stenotype machine, shorthand machine, or steno writer is a specialized chorded keyboard or typewriter used by stenographers for shorthand use. Some stenographers can reach 300 words per minute.
How do court stenographers type so fast?
A stenographer is actually a trained transcriptionist, meaning they record spoken word into written copy; and they do it fast. Stenographers, court reporters & transcriptionist use a specialized keyboard called a stenograph machine which has fewer keys than a conventional alphanumeric keyboard.
Is stenography a dying profession?

Do stenographers make a lot of money?
A stenographer salary can vary somewhat by industry. They earned the highest average annual incomes of $103,930 working for colleges, universities and professional schools, according to the BLS. The BLS reports that 35 percent of all stenographers are employed by the local government and average $68,430.

Why are there less keys on a steno keyboard?
As you may have noticed, the steno keyboard has less keys than a conventional keyboard. Not all the letters of the alphabet are represented on the steno keys so in order to type the missing letters, we use combinations of other letters. This will be covered in a later lesson.
What kind of keyboard do you need for stenography?
