What can you not bring into the Smithsonian?
Many items are prohibited at all Smithsonian museums. Do not bring sharp items into the museums such as knives (including pocket or “Swiss Army” style knives), screwdrivers, scissors, etc. Other items not permitted include firearms, pepper spray, and Mace.
Can you bring food into the Smithsonian museum of Natural History?
You can’t bring outside food into the museum, but you can bring a cooler in your car and have a picnic lunch break in the Rose Garden or at the park on the west side of the museum. You can also grab sandwiches from the NHM Grill, or run next door to the California Science Center to Trimana Grill, Market and Coffee Bar.

Can you bring water bottles into natural history museum?
At NHM and La Brea Tar Pits, on the water-conservation front, we have eliminated individual plastic water bottles. We have also installed water bottle refill stations so thirsty visitors can bring in reusable bottles and be instantly hydrated.
Do museums check your bags?
Yes, almost all museums that don’t want large bags inside have a place to check them.
Do you need to be vaccinated to go to the Smithsonian?
Starting Friday, July 30, the Smithsonian will require all visitors ages 2 and older to wear a mask in its museums and indoor spaces, regardless of vaccination status. The Smithsonian, which began a gradual reopening of its museums in May, stopped requiring fully vaccinated visitors to wear masks indoors June 28.
Are strollers allowed at Natural History Museum?
Strollers are welcome throughout the Museum. The recommended Museum entrance for strollers is 81st Street/Rose Center for Earth and Space.
Can you bring water into the National Gallery of art?
Outside food and drink may not be brought into the National Gallery with the exception of water bottles. Glass containers are not permitted. Please explore the National Gallery through our self-guided resources. Outside groups are welcome, but we ask that all participants follow visitor guidelines and protocols.

A wide variety of drinks, snacks, and dining options are available in and around our museums. Pick up quick bites from our food carts located on the National Mall side of the Air and Space, American History, and Natural History museums, and the Smithsonian Castle (seasonal, weather permitting).
