Is snow naturally white?
Although snow’s natural color may be white, it has been known to take on more hypnotizing hues. According to Libbrecht, snowpack, icebergs and glaciers can sometimes appear blue when light enters their bellies through cracks and crevices (rather than reflecting off of their surfaces) and gets trapped.
Is snow white because of the sun?
Is snow white because of the sun? Kind of. It’s the unique way in which snow (or the ice crystals that make up snow) reflect light that makes it look so white. So, when the sun is shining, snow can look especially white and bright.

Are snowflakes really white?
While snowflakes appear white as they fall through the sky, or as they accumulate on the ground as snowfall, they are in fact totally clear. The ice is not transparent like a sheet of glass is, but rather is translucent, meaning light passes through but not directly.
How do snowflakes really look like?
At just below freezing temperature (0 C) a snowflake might look like a tiny plate, while a few degrees colder sees snowflakes that are shaped like columns or needles. The classic star-shaped snowflake makes an appearance around -15 Celsius. Whatever the shape though, snowflakes usually have six sides.
Why do we see white snowflakes in the sky?
As snow falls through the atmosphere to lands on the ground, light reflects off the surface of the ice crystals, which have multiple facets or “faces.” Some of the light that hits snow is scattered back out equally into all spectral colors, and since white light is made up of all colors in the visible spectrum, our eyes perceive white snowflakes.
How are glaciers different from snowflakes in color?
Glaciers (mountains of ice that form when snow accumulates and compacts) often look blue in color rather than white. Remember, an accumulation of snow has a lot of air separating the snowflakes. Glaciers are different.
Why does the snow on the ground look white?
Most all of the white light from the sun hitting the snow will reflect back and still be white light. Therefore, snow on the ground appears white. One other important point to remember is that snow is indeed tiny ice crystals. Ice itself is not transparent like the glass in a window, but translucent.
Why do snowflakes look like ice cubes?
Much like with water, light bends when it enters into a piece of ice, causing ice cubes or icicles to appear murky even when made from clean water. The tiny snowflakes, or ice crystals, that make up a snow bank all each bend light somewhat like an ice cube, though not quite as uniformly due to varied and complex shapes.
