Do all hair shafts contain a medulla?
These layers are depicted in a longitudinal cross-section of the hair follicle (Figure 2), although not all hair has a medullary layer. Hair texture (straight, curly) is determined by the shape and structure of the cortex, and to the extent that it is present, the medulla.
What is the medulla in hair responsible for?
The hair shaft is formed by three layers. The innermost layer of the hair shaft is named the medulla. It is seen only in large and thick hairs. The middle layer of the hair shaft is called the cortex, made of keratin fibers….HAIR STRUCTURE.

What does hair consist of?
Hair is made of a tough protein called keratin. A hair follicle anchors each hair into the skin. The hair bulb forms the base of the hair follicle. In the hair bulb, living cells divide and grow to build the hair shaft.
What is medulla index of a hair?
The ratio of the diameter of the medulla to the diameter of the entire hair is known as the medullary index. If the medullary index is 0.5 or greater, the hair came from an animal. If the medullary index is 0.33 or less, the hair is from a human.
Does the medulla contain DNA?
The pigment in limb hair is generally granular in appearance, and the medulla is trace to discontinuous. The root contains nuclear DNA. If the hair has been forcibly removed, some follicular tissue containing DNA may be attached. The hair shaft contains abundant mitochondrial DNA, inherited only from the mother.
What does the hair medulla contain?
The medulla, only present in thicker hair types, is the innermost layer of your hair. It consists of a soft, thin core of transparent cells and air spaces.
Which type of hair contains a medulla?
Generally, only thick, coarse hair contains a medulla.
Does blonde hair have a medulla?
The medulla, also referred to as the pith or marrow of the hair, is the innermost layer. Composed of round cells, this layer is normally found in thick and/or coarse hair. Naturally blonde and fine hair generally does not have a medulla.
Can medulla be absent in hair?
It was very clear that the medulla types (presence in hair) are affected by age. The Absent type is more in the lower age groups while there is an increase of the fragmented and the discontinuous type with increase in age. Frequency of absent medulla types was quite high in age groups of 26-30 years.
How are medulla classified?
In the Present Study medulla has been classified into Absent, Fragmented, Discontinuous and Continuous types (Photo attached).
What is the purpose of the medulla in the hair shaft?
The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair shaft. This nearly invisible layer is the most soft and fragile, and serves as the pith or marrow of the hair. Scientists are still uncertain about the exact role of the medulla, but they speculate that it is primarily an extension that is more prominent in depigmented (grey or white) hair.
What are the types of medulla?
Medulla patterns can be these four types: Continuous, interrupted, fragmented and no medulla 4. Non-human medulla patterns are always continuous and can be divided further into these four types: Uniserial, multiserial, vacuolated and lattice 5. The cortex gives us important information about hair color . Sketch of Medulla Medulla Pattern E.
What is the function of the hair cortex?
The hair’s cortex is responsible for giving the hair its strength, color, and texture. The cortex is also affected by chemicals and the overuse of hot tools. Dryness, breakage, and split ends can result when chemicals are applied to your hair.
What is the medulla index?
Medullary index is expressed as a ratio of the shaft diameter to the diameter of the medulla. In animals the medulla will make up more than 1/2 of the total diameter of the hair while in humans the ratio is usually less than 1/3.
