What vehicles have a PCV valve?
All cars that have internal combustion engines have Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valves. On your car, the PCV valve is at the top of the engine in the valve cover. It is pressed into a rubber grommet.
Can you clean a PCV valve?
If your vehicle’s PCV valve isn’t working, you can clean it yourself by immersing it in carburetor cleaner or solvent your auto supply store deems suitable. There should be no gummy deposits or discoloration on a clean valve.
How often do PCV valves fail?
There is no specific lifespan for your car’s PCV valve. It lasts as long as it lasts. Regular maintenance will help provide a longer use life, while neglecting your regular oil changes will shorten it. Ideally, the PCV valve should be changed with every major scheduled service (30, 60, 90K, etc.).
How can you tell if PCV valve is bad?
Symptoms of a Bad or Failing PCV Valve Hose
- Poor fuel economy. If the PCV valve hose is clogged or has a leak, it may cause poor fuel economy.
- Check Engine Light comes on. The Check Engine Light may come on for a variety of reasons, and one of them is a failing PCV valve hose.
- Misfiring while idling.
- Noise from the engine.
How do you know when to replace PCV valve?
If you experience hesitation or surging or an oil leak, it may be a sign of PCV value problems. Your owners’ manual may give a recommendation for when the PCV valve should be replaced – usually between 20,000 mi/32,000 km and 50,000 mi/80,000 km.
